With another 7% decline today, many are comparing the current crash in Russia to the one that happened back in 1998. While a decline of 44% over 80 trading days is pretty dramatic, Russian equity markets still have a long way to go to match the losses seen from 10/97 to 10/98. During the Russian debt crisis, its main equity index, the Russian Trading System, fell 93% over a one-year period.
The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own.
